There is a big difference between being sent to do something and going on your own volition. Today we are going to explore what it means that disciples of Jesus are sent, not just doing their own thing.

Big Idea: You are sent

John 17:18 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.

John 20:21 21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”

Jesus was sent

John 1:1 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:14 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Philippians 2:5–8 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!

John 3:16 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Incarnational Ministry

  1. Humble yourself
  2. Go to needy people
  3. Relate to them

His Mission

Luke 4:18–19 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Luke 19:10 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

Our Mission

Luke 9:1–2 1 When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

Matthew 28:19–20 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Living with a sent mentality means…

  • we are under authority
  • the mission is everything
