Isaiah 52:13 – 53:12

Big Idea: You can overcome your suffering knowing that your God has suffered with you.

6 descriptive characteristics of the Messiah and his life:

  1. He will be glorified (Isaiah 52:13)
    • Servant of the Lord – Israel, one of the prophets, the Messiah
      • Israel didn’t suffer innocently, or meekly
      • Philip Acts 8:30-35 applies this prophecy to Jesus
      • Suffering on behalf of God’s sinful people
  2. He will be brutally beaten (Isaiah 52:14-15)
  3. He will not look like a leader (Isaiah 53:1-3)
    • No physical leadership status
    • No social leadership status
    • despised and rejected – cf. Galatians 3:13
  4. He will bear our sin and the results of our sin (Isaiah 53:4-6)
    • cf. Matthew 8:14-17
    • cf. 1 Peter 2:24; Hebrews 4:15
  5. He will be unjustly accused (Isaiah 53:7-9)
    • cf. Matthew 26:63
    • cf. 1 Peter 2:21-23
  6. He will accomplish the Father’s plan of salvation (Isaiah 53:10-12)
    • cf. 2 Timothy 2:5
