In the sermon on the mount Jesus calls us to an uncommon life, leading us away from our natural tendencies of self-righteousness and self-indulgence to a life of uncommon ethics and dependence on himself as our Savior. Jesus doesn’t waste any time. He comes out swinging in the first part of his sermon with what is commonly called the Beatitudes.
